Bonnaroo, 2012: Saturday/Sunday Recap

Saturday and Sunday of Bonnaroo proved to be everything we hoped and dreamed. We  enjoyed more music from some of the artists we interviewed, tried our best to find time to eat and sleep (in between watching even more shows), and weathered a rainstorm and the resulting sludge that Centeroo became. After three days of eating variations of hot dogs and not showering, we finally packed up our campsite and headed back to Nashville. WE SURVIVED BONNAROO. Below is a recap of Saturday and Sunday, but we will have more photos and interviews from this weekend, so be sure to check back soon.

WILD CUB [Great Taste Lounge; 2:40 p.m.]:

  • -  Geographic location that artist’s set mentally transported the crowd to: Island oasis at a water park on planet Neptune
  • -  Percentage of attendants with painted faces who were presumably at a rave the previous night: 25%
  • -  Groove/funkiness level of drummer: 850/1000
  • -  Material of Dewitt’s day wear: flannel
  • -  Song that instigated the most dancing (on and off-stage): “Wild Light”
  • -  Occupancy level of Bonnaroo-provided oversized sitting cushions: 400%

    OBERHOFER [Sonic Stage; 4:00 p.m.]:

    • -  Musical moment concurrent with eruption of fist pumping: “Away Frm U” outro
    • -  '90s cliché used by man next to me: “Who are these guys anyway?”
    • -  General off-rhythm clapping during: “I Could Go”
    • -  Image on Brad Oberhofer’s colorful graphic tee: 80’s Nagel-style salon poster of pouty lady
    • -  Cause of widespread, simultaneous “hang loose” hand signs: the beachy vibes
    • -  People brought to mind after hearing the announcer’s voice: Joan Rivers, Estelle Getty in “The Golden Girls”
    • -  Best line interjected by vendor during a brief moment of silence: “HEY! HOW ABOUT A COLD ONE?!”

SARAH JAROSZ [The Other Tent; 12:00 p.m.]:

      • -  Cover song performed and described by artist as "creepy": “Shankill Butchers” by The Decemberists
      • -  Instruments used to create best-sounding live set of the entire festival: guitar, fiddle, cello
      • -  Bob Dylan cover: “Ring Them Bells”
      • -  Sound bleed from nearby set: Delta Spirit at Which Stage
      • -  Audience reaction to “Come On Up to the House”: carefree noodle dancing
      • -  Number of songs it took to realize that Jarosz’s socially aware team provided an ASL interpreter for the auditory impaired: 4

SISTER SPARROW & THE DIRTY BIRDS [Café Where; 4:00 p.m.]:

        • -  Musician that received a song dedication: Levon Helm
        • -  Lengthy horn riffs used as song openers: 2
        • -  Band members on stage: 9
        • -  Spirits channeled: Helen Reddy, Janis Joplin, Mama Cass, Brittany Howard (from the    Alabama Shakes)
        • -  Mothers clumsily dancing with babies on their hips: 4
        • -  Style of encore closer: hoedown, in the style of Fergie
        • -  Best words to describe the spirited harmonica solo: choo-choo train
        • -  Chosen dance move by forty-and-up crowd members: air drumming, gentle head-banging

*It should be noted that watching Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds’ set made missing Fitz and the Tantrums and the Alabama Shakes a lot more bearable*

        HONORABLE MENTIONS:

        • -  Triple Tumble Combo Set, (3 major sets tumble into one another as if the fates intended it): Red Hot Chili Peppers into Alice Cooper into Skrillex
        • -  Best light show and performance that was too good to attempt retelling: Radiohead
        • -  Set that was missed because it required fording a sizable sewage ditch: Avett Brothers
        • -  Artist heard from afar that made me stop what I was doing and listen: Gary Clark, Jr.
        • -  Top four artists I will listen to more of after hearing them play at Bonnaroo: Hey Rosetta, Alice Cooper, Black Lips, Gary Clark, Jr.
        • -  Band most frequently spotted: The Kooks
        • -  Owner of most practical piece of footwear: Arleigh Kincheloe (Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds), purple, leopard-print rain boots
        • -  Extra-credit photography assignment for photographer Bekah Cope: Danzig Legacy/Misfits performance

          MISC. OBSERVATIONS FROM THE WEEKEND:

          • -  Efforts thwarted by essentially non-existent wifi functionality and cellphone reception: sending emails; conducting interviews; finding a lost iPhone; finding my way back to my campsite; calling my mother
          • -  Rule of outdoor weather most forgotten by festival attendants: cloudy days bring the worst sunburns
          • -  Indignity suffered in the hospitality area: pulling the one remaining scrap of toilet paper out of my backpack to use in the port-o-pottie
          • -  Second indignity suffered in the hospitality area: shouting alarmingly after having my hat blown off by a blast of air from a fan, “Marilyn Monroe style”
          • -  Color of clothing to avoid during times of increased sweating: grey
