Talking to Sean Watkins about his music career is like playing with a Swiss Army knife; just when you think you have figured it out, you find some cool gadget that does something you’d never expect from a pocketknife. It is, however, a little harder to put your eye out with Sean Watkins.
Sean grew up in San Diego and started his music career at the dusky age of 12 in a band called Nickel Creek. Every heard of them? Sold 2 million records. Won Grammys. Brought bluegrass to the mainstream and changed it forever. Ring a bell?
Anyway, Sean is not one to rest on his laurels and is perpetually producing new music that will stop you in your tracks. He founded Fiction Family with Jon Foreman (Switchfoot) and WPA with Glen Phillips (Toad The Wet Sprocket), Luke Bulla (Lyle Lovett, Jerry Douglas Band), Sara Watkins (Nickel Creek and Sean’s sister), Benmont Tench (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers), Greg Leisz (Wilco, Beck, Joni Mitchell), Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello, Randy Newman) and Davey Faragher (Elvis Costello, Cracker). And now he’s back at it on his own.
Sean has put out 3 solo records and Brite is very excited to be releasing his new record over the next six months. His exclusive Brite releases are “must hears” with songs like “Someone Else” recorded at Wilco’s studio in Chicago with the help of Glenn Kotche and Pat Sunsung.
Sean Watkins’ new music is a collision of bluegrass, folk, pop and rock and we are proud to have him on the roster!
